Solon ‘superpokes’ Mikey: Facebook regulation violates free expression
Kabataan Party-list Representative Raymond “Mong” Palatino today slammed Presidential Son and lawmaker Mikey Arroyo’s call for a tighter regulation of the social networking site Facebook.
Palatino was referring to Arroyo’s reaction to a Facebook user’s post last Sunday displaying a photo allegedly showing Arroyo buying liquor in a supermaket in Quezon City while tropical storm Ondoy was hitting the Metro.
The youth solon said proposing to regulate Facebook at a time when it is utilized by citizens to aid in rescue and relief operations is “simply ludicrous.”
“Everyday, hundreds if not thousands of individuals and groups are creating Facebook applications for their various causes, campaigns, interests, events. Facebook users are sharing their pictures, thoughts, plans, and conversations with their fellow Facebook friends. Regulating social networking sites such as Facebook undermines freedom of speech and expression,” he said.
“It is not surprising that a public figure who has a foul reputation fears transparency provided by these social networking sites. Like the proponents of the Right of Reply bill, those who want to regulate the Internet are only afraid of the monsters of their own creation. They are afraid of the potential of the Internet as it gives individuals the power to become citizen journalists,” Palatino said.
The young solon said, “Technological advances, such as the prominence of blogs and multimedia message service have boosted citizen journalism and helped in the dissemination of information.

soappp!
hainako. tama. leche
regulating facebook is a joke. facebook and twitter are probably the best thing that ever happened because it made rescue and relief efforts more efficient than without these tech platforms. and without these platforms people like me living overseas would not know how much of a joke politicians in the philippines really are, expecially lately. without these platforms nobody would know how little do the people of his kind care about the common people, their kabulastugan easily exposed.
Pathetic talaga. Wala ng malusutan kaya pati facebook pinupuntirya.
@Regina
Mikey IS a joke. Hahahahaha!
They FEAR what they DONT understand… Abnoy tlaga yan si Mikey… special child…
Wow, I’m going to be the in the minority here.
I actually think Arroyo has a point. I don’t agree that Facebook should be regulated, but his call for regulation in publishing certain information has basis. It’s for this same reason that Wikipedia recently added an additional layer of editing to articles of living people. They realized that when you can post information about anyone, sometimes incorrect & malicious information gets through.
You may argue that Facebook is a social networking application where people can post/upload/share whatever they want to, while Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia (which is why they should have more fact-checking and such). However, as we experienced recently, more and more people are turning to Facebook for news… so how do you reconcile that? When describing the new policy, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said, “We have really become part of the infrastructure of how people get information. There is a serious responsibility we have.” I believe that statement was echoed by the spirit of Arroyo’s request: he’s calling for greater responsibility for sites which have become main sources of information.
I’m not saying that Facebook should be regulated. I believe it’s an affront to free speech, and censorship can easily be used to manipulate people’s ways of thinking. What I’m saying is that it’s a complex idea. It’s not just a matter of “he’s a horrible human being and he doesn’t want his sins to come to light.” It’s not as simple as that. Facebook regulation? No. But maybe we should rethink the ways in which we use social media, understand the negative and positive ways it can be utilized, and realize the responsibility we all have when we create something on the web.
There are always two sides to a coin. Besides just lambasting Arroyo’s call, why don’t we all look at the underlying issue? It’s not about curtailing others’ freedom of expression, or hiding one’s dishonorable actions, as this article seems to imply… It’s also about taking responsibility and checking the veracity of information we upload and share, which I think is a very valid thing to point out.

purely pathetic. the minds and ways of these people in power. please don’t ever go to their side.
“…only afraid of the monsters of their own creation.”
How true. Also, consider the fact that international artists used Facebook and Twitter to express their sympathies and their call for aid.
I do not agree with the proposal of regulating Facebook.
I cannot argue as well with people calling for responsibility of what’s being posted or aired, not just in Facebook, but also through other sites or venues over the internet, i.e. blogs.
However, I think that the person who posts those sentiments, or photos or posts knew of the burden or consequence of what’s being posted. Besides, the very essence of these sites is for a person to freely express his ideas and beliefs.
It’s just a matter of exercising a right. The freedom to free expression.
Now, as the famous Filipino quote says, “Bato bato sa langit, ang tamaan, huwag magalit.” Besides, we have to ask ourselves first: “Is there a reason for people to write about us, or even mock us?”
Mikey is another Jinggoy. When he collects multi-million bribes for his mom and dad, he requires the payor add another share for him.
Congress and PGMA family are obviously stealing billions right in front of us, yet people like Mela defend them like they’re saints. Ok lang naman, ‘mukhang’ nagtatrabaho? Would you tolerate a company manager who ‘works’ yet steals?
Regulate It? Are you crazy mikey? Ano Martial rule? Dictatorship? what the…….?
the problem is we have too much democracy.
peace awt!
Regulating Facebook and other social networking sites means curtailing personal freedoms. Worst is that it may pave way for curtailing the use of computer as a means of communication or even a cellular phone or whatsoever. How? Perhaps the reactionary government may use the NTC to manipulate every telecommunications device or even create a firewall to stop people from unearthing facts regarding the government.
Mikey Arroyo seems to act ABnormal, well… he’s the protagonist in his movie with Andrew E at that time, and his idea of regulating? He’s just trying to say it but behind these may be BANNING FACEBOOK and CENSORING INTERNET if not because the right to reply bill is failed to be accepted.
Pero, the point is, hindi talaga maiiwasan yan kasi he is MIKEY ARROYO, a “known” public servant and presidential son in-one. Alam naman natin na their family is full of anomalous allegations, kaya hindi talaga sila makakatakas sa mata ng publiko. This one just proves that wala talaga silang delikadeza and how gross they act.
Tsk. Nakakahiya.
Oh nice, thanks for share!
