A big THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to all those who participated in the Blog Action Day! Watch out for our next Blog Action Day soon.

Our event was also covered by ABS-CBNnews.com.

Here are excerpts from contributions to Blog Action Day: Real Heroes of EDSA:

for adarna, these were the youth activists of the First Quarter Storm

… let us not forget that this year we also mark the 40th anniversary of the First Quarter Storm. Let us honor the FQS activists who ignited the anti-fascist and anti-martial law movement during the Marcos era, they are among the first real heroes of EDSA.

Because of their bravery and patriotism, every campus in the ’70s became a battleground against fascism and social injustice. Numerous student strikes and protests were staged successfully and spread like wildfire throughout the nation.

elmot meanwhile focuses on public school teachers

Maybe, these are also the unsung heroes of EDSA. We may not actually say that they were the ones who visibly stopped tanks and forced Marcos to flee the country and hand back to the nation our democracy; but they were the ones who guided us inside the humble classrooms on the darkest of days and the triumph of the light to make this nation embrace the last streaks of hopes emanating from the east.

most bloggers, like tonyocruz.com, give credit to the millions of ordinary Filipinos

From 1972 to 1986, many people paved the way to Edsa. There were students, workers, farmers, religious people, journalists and various professionals, businessmen, and politicians. Many died or were abducted (and never seen again) as they fought for democracy in schools, factories, farms, the mountains, the streets and in jail.

many however, express disappointment in huge contrast between the present situation and the ideals of EDSA, including teacher ria

I may not be an expert, but isn’t it that that’s what the People Power fight was all about? To break the chains of old politics to usher in a new dawn? At the rate we’re going, it sort of feels that we are once more being chained into our old practices. And the sad part of this: we are not chained by tyrants unwillingly but we allow ourselves to be chained by our bad decisions.

We may be living in a “free” world today, but sometimes, I don’t believe the word free means the same thing anymore. Just take a look at the current situation of our country. We have the Maguinadano Massacre and the Morong 43, we have countless human rights violations, threats to our basic freedoms…all in the face of a supposed democracy.

ederic uses a daily experience to show what he sees is the lack of EDSA’s values

meanwhile, tonyocruz.com lays down a challenge

Today is time once again for heroes and heroism, for Filipinos to step up to the plate, for us to rediscover our bravery, to pay tribute to heroes by keeping the faith and carrying on the fight for authentic freedom and substantive democracy.

bikoy.net goes even further

So, has EDSA 1 failed? No revolutionary triumph will ever last and succeed without the masses at the forefront and without their decisive leadership. There is no genuine triumph in a revolution that does not dismantle the old institutions that have shackled the people for centuries. Revolutions taken advantage of by oppressors posturing as heroes are bound to fail.

Social conditions today are ripe for another uprising. When the next people power revolution comes, we should have learned the glaring lessons.
