Revival of mandatory ROTC slammed

Kabataan Representative Raymond Palatino today balked at Rep. Eduardo Gullas’ proposal to restore the mandatory Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and abolish the National Service Training Program (NSTP) among college and university students.

The youth solon said Rep. Gullas’ House Bill 737, which aims to reinstate the mandatory ROTC for all male college students of both private ad public universities and colleges and repeal the NSTP Act of 2010, would “reverse and disregard the gains of students in their fight against an unrightful military training.”

The ROTC was abolished in 2001 as a result of nationwide protests from students and victims of harassment and extortion following the death of University of Santo Tomas student and ROTC cadet Mark Chua from alleged ROTC “hazing”.

Palatino also disputed the bill’s claim that the AFP-ran program would teach the students how to be patriotic.

“The ROTC has taught its cadets how to become blind and docile servants. With its grim and bloody human rights record, the AFP has no right to meddle with the academic affairs of our youth. A war-mongering and mercenary institution must not be allowed to infiltrate schools and teach students,” he said.

Palatino said that the ROTC must instead be scrapped as it is being used to harass progressive student groups critical of the government.

“The AFP uses the program in its red-baiting campaign against progressive student groups. In many ROTC lectures, soldier-instructors conveniently tagged student activist groups as affiliated with the New People’s Army. The ROTC is clearly a threat to academic freedom,” he said.

Palatino vows to contest the bill.

Magtwitwit at magfifacebook nalang?

Mandatory ROTC should be revived I noticed most youth today are dirty looking like F4 haired, thin-skinned built like drug addicts and lack of discipline. Even former Defense Sec. Gibo Teodoro is in favor of reviving it but never happened.

Statement that ROTC would teach students how to become patriotic or disciplined is a fallacy. There other ways on how to instill those said values.

No to mandatory ROTC and yes to optional ROTC.

Patriotism is instilled in young minds from the homes, to the classrooms and in the communities. Respecting the rights of every citizen of the Phil, executing the responsibilities of every Filipino to his/her homeland, protecting the motherland in times of national security emergencies are learned by every Filipino from womb to tomb.

Patriotism means doing your responsibilities to your country in return or in exchange for the rights that your country insure and protect for you to enjoy. A spade is a spade. Call it counter terrorism or/and anti-insurgency measure with all the related indoctrinations, but please spare patriotism.

Mandatory ROTC has no direct correlation with patriotism.

    NO to mandatory ROTC.

No to revival of Mandatory ROTC program

DON’T USE CHUA AS THE MAIN REASON TO PREVENT THE REVIVAL OF ROTC! IF YOU UNDERGONE ROTC, YOU KNOW THE MEANING AND “REAL” OR “TRUE” PURPOSE OF ROTC. THE MEDIA ARE JUST LOOKING ON THE NEGATIVE SIDES OF ROTC. CAN YOU TAKE A LOOK ON THE POSITIVE SIDES? WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH SOLDIERS TO PROTECT US FROM THE NATIONAL THREATS. CAN YOU DO THE SAME WITHOUT PROPER KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO USE MILITARY TACTICS? THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT! =D

..so what do you mean??..all students in the SUC’s should be really enrolled in ROTC//?? oh come on..rotc sucks..patriotism is not measured merely by the rank you have..i ask you what do you mean by that “real” or “true” purpose of rotc??

It’s natural to slam the revival of ROTC because many of our students are members of the legal fronts of the leftist groups, like ANAKBAYAN, LFS, ANAKPAWIS, BAYAN, BAYAN MUNA, and the likes. These leftist groups have done nothing good to our economy but bringing it down. They just go down to the streets and make blah blah blah for nothing. You wanna know the “real” and/or “true” purpose of ROTC? Why don’t you take MTS or BCMT and see the difference.. That’s all. Thank you..

Jopay. Tutuo yan, patriotism cannot even be measured through the size of the strength but to the strength of the heart.
One who possess “patriotism” will discover the ROTC’s good points and through that, mapaglilingkuran mo ang kapwa ng walang kapalit.
Yes to ROTC program as Mandatory…
