March 29 is Blog Action Day for Education
This week was marked by several student actions that successfully prevented moves to make education less accessible. Among the policies that were either delayed or prevented are:
- an almost-2000% tuition hike in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
- approval of tuition hike proposals in most of the 233 private schools that violated consultation guidelines
However, many issues continue to affect the Filipino youth’s right to a quality and accessible education, such as the continued implementation of forced graduation fees, and the ‘no permit, no exam’ policy, as well as tuition and other fee increases in private universities.
On Monday, March 29, students will again take to the streets to demand an emergency budget allocation for education and the prevention of any and all tuition and other fee increases for the coming school year. We in the KABATAAN Online Team invite you to show your support, both in the streets and online.
That’s why we invite you to take part in our Blog Action Day on Education this Mar.29.
Here’s how you can participate: write a blog entry on the theme “Education is a Right” on Monday (or prepare one before and just post it on that day).
You can write about the present state of our education system, and how well (or unwell) is the youth’s right to a quality and accessible education being implemented. You can write about the conditions in your school, or your personal struggles with regards to finishing your studies.
You can also write about your opinion on the PUP & UP protests, the issues surrounding the events, or even a personal narrative if you were able to participate. You can choose to write about the importance of education and the education system to Filipinos and the Phil. society in general.
After writing your entry, post a link to this page. Also, (especially if you are blogging on a social network like Facebook or Friendster) post the link to your entry at this page’s Comments section. This way, we’ll be able to monitor how many bloggers are participating and we can thank those who did. And don’t forget to insert this blog button into your entry with the following code
<p style=”text-align: center”><a href=”http://kabataanpartylist.com/”><img class=”aligncenter” src=”http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs437.ash1/24160_1316239519549_1637557695_768710_2965287_n.jpg” alt=”" width=”200″ height=”300″ /></a></p>
Here are other ways you can participate in the Blog Action Day for Education:
Post this message in your Facebook, Friendster, etc. Status: “Everyone has the right to a quality and accessible education. If you agree, please post this as your Status for the whole day on March 29”
Make this picture your profile pic in your various social network accounts for the entire day

Education is a right. Let’s all stand up for our rights on March 29. ###

Education is a right!
Education has played a crucial role in the transformation of the society from barbarism to civilization. And it is through education we can safeguard its course. Education is the threshold of knowledge and it defines the culture. Provided its roles in our society and in the world at large it has become a topmost priority of every country that it has to give every child a guarantee for a better future through education.
We have passed the rule of Spanish. The time when education is solely for the rich and for the people who belong to their race. They deprived the “indios” the education instead sent them to convents learning prayers in Latin or sent them to work fields. Yes that was history long time ago but it has made a new twist, this time in an indirect form of depriving education.
Where in the world would put a high price on education? In the Philippines it is said that education is given a bigger budget compared to any other concerns. But what transpired during these past weeks was a testament of the failure of the government to provide a comprehensive educational program for its citizens. It has raised tuition fees at 2,000% per unit. In the nearby provinces of Metro Manila are students struggling to challenge the increase of tuition fees.
Another concern regarding education is a common scenery among public schools. Children are sent by their parent to study in a public schools because with their income they can no longer afford to send their children to a private school. In public schools, children share hand-me-down books and are jam-packed in one room usually numbering to 60 students in a regular sized room. In other cases a room is divided into two different grades like the other half is grade 3 and the other is grade 4. Class’ hours are cut short to accommodate a night high-school. Some conduct their classes in a make-shift classroom like under the tree or at the staircase because of the imbalance ratio of students to classrooms. Yes this concern may enhance or make use of the resourcefulness of us, Filipinos but it signals no good, especially entrusting our future to the present conditions of education here in our country.
They may have scholars but of course that’s plan of their game plan because this government doesn’t want to unveil its true nature otherwise they will be reproached as a lesson from Marcos’ era. They should offer scholarships to lure people away from their original plan. They are just thinking of making themselves rich. Purchasing Mercedes and Rolls-Royce instead of books and pencils. They purchase houses in exclusive subdivisions instead of constructing additional classrooms.
The children are the future. Whatever they will do and the type of society in the future reflects the kind of education they received. Politicians brandish good plans for education during their campaigns but none of them made any significant improvement in the country’s educational system. At Congress they argue on the allotted budget for education. Where is that money? We see no changes. They may have forgotten that education is a right. And a mere neglect of the cause for education is a crime against the people. If this is the way they manage education, imagine what kind of society we shall live in the future. Illiteracy rate will rise and things come in a chain reaction, rising unemployment and so on amounting to the fall of our civilization and back to barbarism. Do you want these things to happen? If no then stand up for your right!
