Aquino’s decision to abolish SK disappoints youth solon

Kabataan Partylist Representative Raymond Palatino today expressed his disappointment over President Benigno Aquino III’s decision to abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

“We find Aquino’s basis to abolish the SK unreasonable and unacceptable,” says Palatino.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda earlier said that the president wants the barangay elections to continue this October but wants the SK abolished for the main purpose of “saving costs”.

“Aquino is depriving the youth of a venue which lets them stand up and participate in nation-building. The Philippines is the first and only country with a structure such as the SK,” he said.

Palatino said that it is very ironic that Aquino has proposed the abolition just as the whole world is celebrating International Youth Day.

The United Nations celebrates International Youth Day every August 12th.

“This year’s commemoration is particularly significant around the world because the UN General Assembly has proclaimed 2010 as the International Year of the Youth,” he said.

“This move will only discourage the youth to perform a more active role in instilling changes in society. Is this cost-cutting worth our democracy?” he said.

“It is very disappointing that the SK is now being regarded as a mere dispensable expense more than a vehicle for youth in nation-building.”

Last week, Palatino filed House Bill 1963, or the SK Reform Bill, proposing to reform and strengthen the SK system. ###

It is true that the youth today should not be deprived of the right to partake into some political endeavor to be part of building our nation. Aquino must be able to understand that abolishing SK is not the right solution on the crises that our nation is en-faced today. Let alone, other things being affected but not the participation of the youth to take active roles in voicing out and doing good for their localities.
